  • Breastfeeding with high dose caffeine

My patient who is breastfeeding her 9 month old has intracranial hypotension, and her neurologist suggested caffeine 200 mg 3 times a day. Is it possible to continue breastfeeding? If she pumped and mixed with stored milk, what kind of ratio of caffeinated milk to non-caffeinated milk would you suggest?

    Kpasque:

This answer largely depends on how much milk the mom is delivering to the infant daily and I don't know what that is.

At 9 months, I'd suggest it is lower. I'd suggest starting at half milk and half formula until you can see if the infant responds to the dose via breast milk. IF the infant is suffers from insomnia, then I'd suggest more formula less breastmilk.
