  • Klonopin and breastfeeding

My son is 4 months old, and about 20lbs. I am supposed to take my 1mg klonopin 3x daily, but since I am exclusively breastfeeding I only take it when I absolutely need it. Since he's been born I've had to take it twice [hoping I don't have to anymore] I took 1 mg yesterday around 1-2pm. How long do I have to wait until I can breastfeed him again? When I take it I feed him frozen milk that I have stored away, and I pump&dump during that time.

    Amberlynn224,

Klonopin is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 2.8% of your dose. It is most concentrated in the breast milk in 1-4 hours after taking a dose, so take it after nursing when you have you have a break before nursing again. We think if you keep the dose low you can continue to nurse as long as your infant is not symptomatic. Monitor your infant for sedation, slowed breathing rate, poor feedings and poor weight gain.
