  • Breastfeeding and prednisone

    Hi,
My patient is supposed to take prednisone 20 mg 2 times a day for a week.
Is it okay to continue breastfeeding her 1 month old baby.
    Thank you,
    Miri Pevzner B.pharm, IBCLC

    miripev,

Prednisone is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 1.8-5.3% of moms dose. Short term use is ok. The main concern is when steroids are used at high doses for an extended period of time. We recommend for doses greater than 40mg a day to wait 4 hours to nurse. In her case where she is taking 20mg twice a day we would recommend taking right after she has nurses as half of this medication is out of her milk in about 2-3 hours.
