  • Nursing with Cimzia

I am currently getting ready to start Cimzia for my RA. My son is 2 1/2 months old and i would love to continue nursing. Two Dr.s have told me that it is probably safe. I would love more info and another opinion.

    Dear Amie,

Cimzia is a monoclonal antibody that is used in the treatment of rheumatoid arthritis and Crohn's disease. There are no human studies, but animal studies have shown minimal transfer into milk. The medication has a large molecular weight which means it likely does not transfer into milk because the molecule is too large. The recommended dose is 400 mg subcutaneously (under the skin) every 2 weeks initially then may be decreased to every 4 weeks when your condition permits. The half life is 14 days which means half of the medication would be out of your system in that length of time. Dr. Hale states Cimzia should be compatible with breastfeeding. Let me know if you have further questions.

    Sincerely,
