  • Anti fatique meds that are compatable with breastfeeding?

My daughter has had MS since she was 16 - she is now 29 and just had her first baby 2 weeks ago. Her symptoms are just now starting to show up again and she is wanting to take her amantadine again - everything I can find on it is very vague. Can you help us find a medication that is ok to use during breastfeeding to help relieve the fatigue. Her milk supply is great right now and she is pumping to store up extra incase she has to be treated with solu-medrol.

    Dear cshaw,

Amantadine is not expected to enter breastmilk in clinically relevant amounts so unlikely to affect her breastfed infant. The main concern with this medication is that is it known to decrease prolactin; and therefore, has potential to decrease her milk supply. If she decides to take this medication, she should observe her milk supply closely. The time amantadine is highest in her milk would be one to four hours after taking her dose so she should try to avoid that time if possible. Her infant should be observed for poor feeding and constipation. If you have further questions, please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday, 8 to 5, CDT.

    Sincerely,
