  • Hyperthroidism

I've just been diagnosed with hyperthroidism. I've been given a prescriptions for Propylthiouracil (PTU) and Propranolol (beta-blocker). Are these medications considered safe to take while breastfeeding. If so, is there a recommended safe dosage?

    Dear J. Petersen,
Both PTU and Propranolol are probably safe to use while pregnant. Only small amounts transfer into milk. To be safe, you might want to ask your pediatrician to monitor the baby's thyroid function during therapy. Checking TSH and T4 levels. With Propranolol, the baby should be monitored for signs of low blood pressure such as limpness and tiredness. The Adult dose of Propranolol is 160-240 mg daily and for PTU it is 100mg three times a day. I hope this helps. If you have any further questions please call the infantrisk center at (806)352-2519.

      Hyperthyroidism

      Dear Dr. Milla -
Many thanks for your reply. The information you've provided is encouraging. I've started taking both the PTU & Propranolol and will be having my daughter monitored by our pediatrician as you've suggested. Kind Regards.
