    orencia and breastfeeding

Hi all, my Rheumatologist has assured me that it will be safe to keep nursing my 4 month old & start my Rheumatoid Arthritis treatment with Orencia.( Humira didn't work) I am, also, on 5mg of prednisone. I am looking for some reassurance even though I completely trust my Doctor. I was getting my baby's immunization shots & the nurse directed me to Dr. Hale's website. Also, it is safe to immunize my baby while on Orencia. Thank you in advance.

    Dear momofthree,

Abatacept inhibits T cell activation and the production of the cytokines TNF alpha, interferon-gamma and interleukin-2. We do not have data on the transfer of this antibody into human milk. Due to its large molecular weight and unusual structure, it is not likely to enter breastmilk in clinically relevant amounts. Use of abatacept is probably compatible with breastfeeding. Hope this information helps.

    Sincerely,
