metformin during pregnancy
What are risks/benefits of taking metformin during pregnancy? Research info available? Mom's ob wants her off the med immediately, and she is wishing to optimize likelihood for sufficient milk production.

Sara:
There is a huge literature on metformin and pregnancy. Most of it is reassuring that metformin is not teratogenic at all. It has in the past been popular for women with PCOS, but that seems to be waning.
As for likelihood for producing sufficient milk production, we do not have data that is is true. Some suggest that it might help in milk production, but I don't know if this is accurate.
So, for pregnancy, its probably safe, but may not be necessary in most cases.
For breastfeeding, it might help milk production, but I'm not certain of this at all.
