  • Ativan for panic attacks and anxiety while pregnant

Hi, I'm in my second trimester and I have been going through a lot lately. It's causing me panic attacks and anxiety. Also I have ibs and the Stress and anxiety seem to make it worse. My question is, is it safe to take my ativan on an as needed basis? Only when I'm having an attack? I would take .5. Would this be ok?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

Ativan (lorazepam) and other drugs in the same class are not recommended in pregnancy. There is positive evidence of them causing minor birth defects and they can affect the baby's ability to thrive just after birth.

There are other medications which are much safer, though they act differently on the brain. Counseling and cognitive-behavioral training are also helpful in reducing panic attacks. You should speak to a psychiatrist about what options are right for you.
