Unfortunately, we have very limited information on how typhoid can affect your pregnancy or unborn baby. However, we do know that typhoid can be a serious illness, which can make you very unwell if not treated promptly, and therefore cause complications.
From the limited information we have at hand, we know the following:
typhoid infection can cross the placenta to cause infection and miscarriage.
typhoid (and other water-borne infections) can increase the risk of having a premature birth, a low-birthweight baby or a baby that is small for dates.
One study found 25 cases of typhoid infection in 15,940 births. Out of these 25 cases, there was:
one first trimester miscarriage
six pregnancy losses (in second and third trimesters)
six premature births
12 normal births
In this study, all cases of miscarriage and pregnancy loss were in mums who had five full days of typhoid symptoms without any treatment. Babies who were born with typhoid infection were treated with the drug ceftriaxone and made a full recovery.
Another study compared 181 pregnant women who had typhoid, with randomly selected age-matched pregnant women without typhoid. This study found that there was no increased risk of premature birth or pregnancy complications because of typhoid. The study found no apparent effect of typhoid fever on pregnancy outcome, such as:
gestational age at delivery
pregnancy complications
modes of delivery
birth weight
birth Apgar scores
Taking these into consideration, it is hard to tell how you or your baby will be affected by typhoid. That being said, timely diagnosis and right treatment may help in having a healthy pregnancy and baby.
So, do inform your doctor immediately if you have any symptoms, or if you doubt that you may be infected.
