    mom admitted to hospital in isolation d/disseminated Histoplasmosist mom on amphotericin now but will be on itraconazole in 1-2 weeks. not concerned about the amphotericin but itraconazole and will baby be exposed to disseminated Histoplasmosis?

    Hi, thanks for your post.

    The itraconazole is unlikely to be a problem for the baby. Very little gets into the milk and it has a low oral bioavailability in infants. No studies have been published describing Histoplasma infection via breastmilk. It is not clear whether expressed breastmilk is safe in this case. Even though infection by this fungus is uncommon in immunocompetent patients, we advise that you respect the isolation order and minimize the baby's direct contact with the mother.
