  • Cortisone injection in foot?

Hi, My doctor is recommending the following cortisone injection into my big toe joint:

    -0.5cc of 1% Lidocaine with Epinephrine 1:200,000
    -0.5cc of Dexamethasone phosphate 4mg/dl
    -0.5cc of Kenalog 10ml/dl

My son is 4 months old and exclusively breastfed. I am wondering if I can breastfeed after such a shot and if not, how long I would need to wait? And she also mentioned that she could do just one of the second/third drugs. In that case is one more compatible with breastfeeding that the other?

Thanks in advance for your help!

    tara11,

Lidocaine stays mostly where it is injected, epinephrine has a short half-life of a few minutes. Steroids do not enter milk readily. These would all be ok to breastfeed following low doses such as yours. High doses of Kenalog we would recommend a 12 hour pump and dump, otherwise you can go ahead and nurse.
