  • Decadron taken orally

Hi, I had trouble getting through the infant risk hotline, but I need some help! I am getting a tooth implant and I was prescribed amoxicillin and decadron for 6 days. Am I okay to breastfeed? The decadron is .5 mg 4 times a day for three days, then 3 times a day for 2 days then 1 time a day. My dentist told me I absolutely can't nurse and need to pump and dump. I don't have enough frozen milk for him so I need to know if I can nurse?

    Hannvac,

Decadron is rated an L3-no data-probably compatible. Steroids do not enter the milk readily, very little is expected to transfer into the milk compartment. The problem with steroids is when they are used at high doses for prolonged periods, then it could affect the infants linear growth. A total of 2mg a day is not considered a high dose. We believe that it would be ok to breastfeed at this dose. We recommend feeding your infant first then taking the medication after you nurse where you have a break before feeding again.
