  • ITP and elthrombopag

A mother of a 4 month-old breastfeeding baby was diagnosed with ITP 2 months ago. She is not responsive to corticosteroids and her hematologist has suggested elthrombopag. Unfortunately I cannot find any literature on that drug. What would you suggest? Thank you.

    danilatou,

Elthrombopag (Promacta) is not recommended in breastfeeding mothers. Dr Hale states this medication is too risky because it can increase a young infants bone marrow activity and they are already born with extra cells they are trying to slough off.
