Would rhodiola rosea be ok when nursing a 3 year old toddler who nurses for nap and bed time only? Thanks.

    bmaqmom,

We do not recommend herbal products as a whole because they have not been studied, they are not FDA regulated and they could have cross contamination in processing. In your case with a toddler that is only feeding a few times a day they will not be getting much milk so less of the herb would be transferred. According to the Natural Medicine database this herb has low toxicity in adults when used short term at doses up to 340mg twice a day for 6-10 weeks. There is insufficient information regarding the safety with it's use during pregnancy or breastfeeding. The side effects to monitor for would include, hyper-salivation or dry mouth, sedation or insomnia, restlessness, irritability, increased blood pressure, pulse, or heart palpitations.
