  • Brimonidine

I have a mom who has to use brimonidine for her glaucome. I saw that it can go through the milk because the the plasmatic protein link is only 33%. The half life is 3hours. Can the mom breastfeed her baby if she takes this medication (for exemple after the teat). What is the the risk category for this medication? (L1?L2?L3?...?) Thanks for you help

    carolinedeville,

Brimonidine is rated an L3-no data-probably compatible. "The degree of systemic absorption is not well established and may be variable from patient to patient. There are no data on oral bioavailability in adults or babies." (Medications and Mothers' Milk database, Dr Thomas Hale PhD) Although there are no data concerning the transfer of this medication, Lactmed suggest that the use of this medication as 0.2% eye drops does not adversely affect a nursing infant. We would recommend waiting a half-life of 3 hours to nurse to reduce exposure, and to further reduce the amount absorbed we would suggest placing pressure over the tear duct before applying the drops and continuing for at least 1 minute after administration. Monitor the infant for drowsiness, not waking to feed, poor feedings and dry mouth. We would say as long as the infant is not symptomatic it is probably ok to continue to nurse while using this medication.
