  • Gabapentin and breastfeeding

my doctor would like to prescribe me Gabapentin to treat post herpetic nerve pain. She told me the ibuprofen and Tylenol I currently take to manage pain is Ok while breastfeeding but the Gabapentin is not. My baby is 7.5 months old. What is the latest research and recommendations?
    thank you.

    Susie003,

Gabapentin is rated an L2-limited data-probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 6.6% of your dose,. We think it is probably ok to breastfeed if your dose is within or below the normal dose range of 300mg-600mg 3 times a day and your infant is not symptomatic. Monitor your infant for sedation or irritability, not waking to feed/poor feeding, vomiting and tremor. Take the medication after nursing, it is most concentrated in the milk in 1-3 hours after taking the medication.

If you really need to take the Gabapentin then go for admin's advice. Otherwise, if your pain can be controlled by milder medications like Tylenol, then just go for Tylenol. Stay on the safe side.
