  • Chemotherapeutic agents targeting lactocytes?

I've been on ABVD chemotherapy for Hodgkin's lymphoma for the past 3 months, hoping to start breastfeeding in between treatments, understanding I have to wait 10 days for these drugs to clear my system. But I've been having a lot of trouble with my milk supply. I'm wondering if my chemo drugs are affecting my ability to produce milk? Would ABVD chemotherapy kill off lactocytes?

    Anneke,

I'm sorry we just do not know if the chemo agents could decrease milk supply, we have had a few calls where moms on chemo have had low supply.

Any information on whether galactogogues like domperidone are safe with chemo or would help with low milk supply in this situation? Thanks!

        Anneke:

Galactagogues like domperidone are great IF you have low prolactin levels. I'd have your doctor draw a blood sample 2 hours after breastfeeding, and measure prolactin levels. If they are < 50 ng/mL, then domperidone would work great.

As domperidone may alter your heart beat, have your doctor do an EKG first and keep the dose 30-60 mg per day. (Evaluate for Prolonged QT interval)

Withhold periods for these drugs is :

        Doxorubicin : 7-10 minimum
        Bleomycin : 24 hours minimum
        Vinblastine: 10 days minimum
        Dacarbazine : 48 hours minimum
