hello, I am inquiring about the use of OxyContin while nursing a toddler. With 5mg once per day and waiting to breastfeed for 5-6 hours after taking medication, how big is the risk? Baby is 17 months old.
Thank you.
OxyContin is rated an L3-limited data, probably compatible. The amount that transfers into breast milk is 1-8% of your dose. If you are only taking 5mg once a day the risk would be very low since your toddler is receiving less milk at this age than a newborn, and they are better able to metabolize this medication. Monitor your toddler for sedation, slowed breathing rate, pallor, difficulty feeding, constipation and appropriate weight gain.
