I have a NICU mom (30 weeker GA) who is taking Pulsatilla prescribed by her homeopathic midwife. This mom also had a bilateral breast reduction so she currently has a limited supply. Her twins are also receiving donor breast milk. How well does Pulsatilla transfer into breastmilk?

    Dear frenchalice,

Herbal supplements are considered L4 on Dr. Hale's lactation rating scale. There are literally thousands of herbal products and teas used today. Many are safe and some are unsafe for breastfeeding mothers. He recommends to consult an authority in herbal products before ingesting these drugs while pregnant or breastfeeding. There are no studies on the use of Pulsatilla and breastfeeding. In a report by Martin, et al, there were two lactone compounds found in Pulsatilla and one of them causes sedation.[1] Because premature infants are at risk for apnea, this product may be especially concerning.
    1. Pharmacologic effects of lactones isolated from Pulsatilla alpina subsp. apiifolia.
