I have a mother with an 8 month old that needs to have surgery for a prolapse. I understand that vaginal use of Betadyne is contraindicated in breastfeeding, but is that for only a period of time during use, or could she pump and dump for a couple days during use? Not finding enough info and she is getting conflicting information. Thanks!

Dear Jackie,
Betadyne is hazardous vaginally if used repeatedly as the iodine content may affect the infant's thyroid. I was unsure from your question whether this is a one time dose as prep for surgery or if mother would be using daily for several days or weeks. If it is a one time dose, risk to the infant would be low but with repeated dosing, pumping and discarding for 24 hours from the last dose would be suggested.
Sincerely,
