  • Tanning Sprays and Creams for the breastfeeding mother

Are tanning creams/sprays and/or bronzers safe for a nursing mother to use? I am a lay breastfeeding consultant and cannot find any information on this for a mother I am helping. I did find that in most sunless tanning products, the active ingredient is DHA (dihydroxyacetone). I could not find that drug in "Medications and Mothers Milk". Thank you! Judy

    Dear Katie's Grandma,

Dr. Hale states that these are just spray on dyes, the transcutanteous absorption would be minimal. If the mom wanted to pump and discard her milk a few hours following administration it would virtually eliminate any problem...but I really doubt this is necessary. Also, she should not spray her areola or nipple as it could then potentially transfer to the infant. Hope this information is helpful.

    Sincerely,
