  • Hydroxyurea for sickle cell anemia

Does anyone have any information on hydroxyurea and breastfeeding? Hale (2008) says L2 ("Safer") but it seems everywhere else I look says it's contraindicated. This would be for daily use. Any insight would be appreciated.

    Thanks!

    Dear Piedmontbabies,

Hydroxyurea, an antineoplastic agent, is now categorized as L3. The amount of the mom's dose that is secreted into breastmilk (RID) is 4.3 %. The half-life (how long it takes for half of the drug to be excreted from the body) is short at 3 to 4 hours. Due to the potential toxicity of the drug, even though the RID is low, it is recommended to withhold breastfeeding for a minimum of 12 to 24 hours after the dose. Please call the InfantRisk Center at 806-352-2519. We are open Monday through Friday 8 to 5 CST. Because you will be taking the medication daily, we need to get a little more information on your dose, the age of your child etc. to give specific recommendations for your particular situation.

    Sincerely,
    Cindy Pride, MSN, CPNP

      Thanks!

Thank you for getting back to me. This is not for me, so I passed your phone number on to the mom who will be taking the medication.
