The therapeutic benefits of zinc are no secret. In fact, the National Institute of Health recommends zinc supplements for maintained immune function, as well as treatment for skin ulcers, acute diarrhea and common colds. Zinc, Vitamin A, copper, iron and Vitamin B12 deficiencies are a major problem world-wide. Thus, researchers speculated that when treating children with acute diarrhea the therapeutic benefits of zinc would be increased if used in tandem with other vitamins and minerals, such as Vitamin A. However, a recent study concluded that zinc supplementation alone was equally as beneficial as a combination of zinc with other nutrients in reducing the duration and intensity of acute diarrhea in children.
