Caffeine Intake

06.03.2010

Caffeine is a common drug found in many of the products we consume daily. These include coffee, sodas, tea, and chocolate. Although studies have shown that consuming small amounts of caffeine during pregnancy has little effect on the fetus, caffeine can cause the fetus’ heart rate to rise as well as decrease flow through the placenta. Studies have shown that too much caffeine (more than 7 cups daily) can increase the chances of adverse outcomes. These include premature delivery, stillbirth, low birth weight, and miscarriages.
