Bio-terrorrism is a novel form of modern warfare that uses chemical or biological agents to wreak havoc. The use of the bacteria Bacillus anthracis is particularly effective as a biological terrorist agent due to the ease of transmission by inhalation, high mortality rate, and stability. Typical incubation period is 1-43 days, depending on amount exposed and immunity. Antibiotics are effective in the treatment of anthrax. People that are high-risk, such as military personnel, may opt for use of the anthrax vaccine. Anthrax vaccine adsorbed is currently the only licensed anthrax vaccine for humans in the United States. It is reported to be safe for breastfeeding mothers, as there is no live or dead bacteria in the vaccine, mainly protective antigen that allows the body to release antibodies to fight anthrax.
Please see below for a link to the CDC recommendation for breastfeeding mothers exposed to anthrax. The website discusses prophylaxis and treatment for exposure to anthrax.
